New MX EXPERIENCE BOX lets keyboard enthusiasts try 10 different switch types before they buy.

CHERRY has expanded its range of mechanical keyboard switches with the launch of the MX ILLUMA RED, MX ILLUMA BROWN and MX EMERALD REEF. Designed for different typing preferences, the new switches focus on improved stability, enhanced RGB lighting and quieter operation.

The new launches are also included in CHERRY’s MX EXPERIENCE BOX 2ND EDITION, which gives users the opportunity to test 10 different MX switches and compare typing feel, responsiveness and sound levels.

MX ILLUMA: Greater Stability and Improved RGB Lighting

The new MX ILLUMA range has been developed to deliver a more stable and precise typing experience.

The MX ILLUMA RED is a linear switch designed for smooth, consistent keystrokes, while the MX ILLUMA BROWN provides gentle tactile feedback without compromising stability. Both switches are built on CHERRY’s Gold Crosspoint technology and are engineered to withstand more than 100 million keystrokes. 

A redesigned housing and refined internal guidance system help reduce unwanted movement and noise, resulting in a more controlled typing experience. The switches also feature integrated lenses that improve light distribution, creating brighter and more even RGB illumination across compatible keyboards.

The MX ILLUMA RED has an actuation force of 45 cN, while the MX ILLUMA BROWN offers a tactile force of 55 cN. Both are available in packs of 36 switches.

MX EMERALD REEF: Tactile Feedback Without the Noise

Built on the MX ILLUMA platform, the MX EMERALD REEF has been designed for users who enjoy tactile feedback but prefer a quieter typing experience.

Developed with input from the keyboard enthusiast community, the switch delivers a distinct tactile bump while incorporating noise-dampening features that reduce sound when keys are pressed and released. An enhanced stem guidance system also helps minimise wobble, improving overall stability and accuracy.

The MX EMERALD REEF also stands out visually, with a turquoise to housing, light blue base and neon green stem inspired by the colours of coral reef.

The switch has an actuation force of 41 cN, actuates at 2.0mm and is rated for more than 50 million keystrokes. It also supports full RGB lighting and is available in packs of 36 switches.

Try Before You Buy with the MX EXPERIENCE BOX

Choosing the right keyboard switch typically comes down to personal preference. To help users find the right option that suits them best, CHERRY’s MX EXPERIENCE BOX 2ND EDITION includes sample versions of 10 MX switches:

The MX EXPERIENCE BOX brings together a broad range of switch characteristics and sound profiles, allowing users to directly compare typing feel, feedback and noise levels. All included switches feature a 5-pin design and are compatible with hot-swap keyboards. The switches are supplied in plastic-free cardboard packaging, which also protects the contact pins during transport.

The switches can be tested side-by-side in compatible hot-swappable keyboards, making it easier to compare feel, sound and performance before committing to a full set.
